Nearly everyone who wants a cell phone wants one – about 90 percent of the U.S. population. And because the market for mobile phones has hit the saturation point, the competition is at its hottest level yet, Auriga USA analyst Chandan Sarkar reportedly told news media.
Perhaps that’s “why the news that the iPhone (News - Alert) could be coming to Verizon Wireless is such a big deal,” speculated Barrons blogger Eric Savitz, noting that carriers will have to take market share from rivals to grow subscriber counts.
Earlier today news broke that Apple is secretly toiling away on a new iPhone that could work on CDMA, the main wireless network technology of AT&T’s (News - Alert) archrival Verizon Wireless.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, Apple (News - Alert) plans to begin producing this year a new iPhone that could allow U.S. phone carriers other than AT&T to sell the phone. Since the iPhone’s launch in 2007, AT&T has been its exclusive carrier. Currently, iPhones can only be used on GSM smartphones, which are only available through T-Mobile (News - Alert) and AT&T in the United States.
