Authors and Dogs Teach Fire Safety Through Skype

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

Two educator/authors and their best friends came together today to share their stories and impart a lesson of fire safety to more than 500 children.
But this wasn’t just an ordinary, run-of-the-mill lesson on “stop, drop and roll” lesson.
Rather, the authors -- Barbara Techel and her paralyzed dog, Frankie, with author and firefighter Dayna Hilton and her dog, Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog -- came together today via Skype (News - Alert) to share their stories with the children of Clarksville (Ark.) Primary school.

Called “the first presentation of its kind in the country,” the Skype-blasted video showed Frankie (from Elkhart Lake, Wisc.) and Sparkles the Fire Safety Dog (from Clarksville, Ark.), with their owners sharing the importance of fire safety. The authors encouraged children who may have family or friends with physical challenges to help them have a plan, among other fire safety messages, so they and their families and friends can help stay safe from fire.

And according to one of the six-year-old students: “It was cool watching Frankie and Sparkles make history.”
