By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Truphone, a global mobile operator reportedly announced the immediate free availability of its new application for Android (News - Alert) enabled mobile handsets enabling Wi-Fi calling on the Android platform.

The Truphone for Android release 3.0 integrates a full VoIP engine letting users make free calls to Truphone, Google (News - Alert) Talk and Skype when the communicating people are in WiFi. Truphone also offers low cost calls to landlines and mobiles globally whether the callers are in WiFi or not. The new interface offers enhanced user experience from the mobile VoIP application. Version 3.0 will replace the present version 2.0, company sources said.
The Truphone (News - Alert) application for Android can be downloaded for free and is compatible with the HTC G1, HTC Magic and HTC Hero. Company sources said that compatibility with other Android models with firmware 1.5 or above like the Motorola Droid and the Nexus One will follow.
The new Android application includes fully integrated multi-headset Instant Messaging support for Skype (News - Alert), Google Talk, AIM, Yahoo and MSN customers. Users can easily change over between different conversations and also keep in touch with friends on any IM service.
“We are delighted to be able now to offer the full Truphone experience to Android device owners around the world,” Geraldine Wilson, CEO of Truphone said. “The Truphone application allows customers to make free or low cost calls from their mobiles whether they are in or out of Wi-Fi, whether they are using the Android, iPhone, iPod touch or Blackberry devices.”
Wilson said that the cost savings, convenience and unparalleled call quality on Truphone makes it really easy to stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues all over the world. The new application is based on a previous application which allows customers to make low cost calls on their mobiles when out of WiFi. During this time the application works by making a local GSM call to the Truphone gateway from where the call is routed over to the Truphone network.
The company’s solutions are characterized by high quality calling experience made possible by the use of innovative handset software and premium voice routing partners, according to Truphone officials.
Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert) sources explained that Truphone is capable of differentiating its products owing to its commitment in research and development and by having strategic partnerships with major industry participants across the mobile ecosystem. This has made it a dominant player in the mVoIP market.
