Dell Dives Into Unified Communications

By Stefania Viscusi, TMCnet Assistant Editor

Continuing to offer simplified IT solutions to customers, Dell (News - Alert) is now taking a dive into Unified Communications, announcing it is offering customers a new solution to simplify the path to unified communications through products, partnerships and services.

The new Unified Communications (News - Alert) Solution from Dell brings together communications options like email, fax, phone, video and the PC, and pre-integrates them for a "business-ready" solution, so customers benefit from reduced complexity and improved productivity.

With help from Dell, customers can choose from four different modules, or combine them in a way that makes most sense for their environments-- reducing risk and complexity, all within a safe and tested set of configurations.

The modules include:

-- Core Office Communication Server 2007 – for instant messaging and on-premise Microsoft (News - Alert) Live Meeting.

-- Office Communication Server: Telephony – for call routing tracking and management, VoIP gateway and public branch exchange (PBX (News - Alert)) integration.

-- Audio and Video Conferencing – for point-to-point conference, video conference and VoIP audio conferences.

-- Exchange Unified Messaging - for voicemail, e-mail and fax in Microsoft Outlook and anywhere access of Microsoft Outlook Inbox and Calendar.

For their new modular UC solution, Dell includes new offerings from long time partner Microsoft, including: Microsoft Office Communication Server 2007, Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, Microsoft Office Communicator and Microsoft Outlook.

The company has also announced a partnership with Nortel (News - Alert) to deliver the telephony, VoIP components and telephony services integral to UC and which leverages Nortel's entire Enterprise Solutions portfolio.

"Unlike recent competitive offerings, Dell chose to pre-integrate a solution so customers don't have to purchase and manage separate systems and services," explains Rick Becker, vice president of solutions, Dell Product Group in a statement to the press. "We want to make it simple for our customers to deploy unified communications so their end users can get access to all their messages in one place -- whether its e-mail, phone or mobile device. This will pave the way for more business-ready productivity tools."
