While the potential advantages of video conferencing are appealing, the technology has not been implemented in more than a handful of organisations.
This is likely to change in the future as video conferencing moves to the desktop.
Recently, Videoconferencing systems provider LifeSize partnered with LG Electronics (News - Alert) to introduce the LG Executive system in Europe.
The videoconference system combines LifeSize's technology with LG screens to offer a desktop videoconferencing system that can replace the traditional monitor for a PC. Empowered with an understanding of videoconferencing strategies and techniques, this system facilitates the effective design and deployment of videoconferencing applications to contribute to the establishment of virtual collaborative relationships and the enrichment of the communication service.
Jeff Dowell, VP of Digital Signage, LG Electronics said that the integration of LG HD display technology with LifeSize's (News - Alert) innovative HD video communications technology results in a natural extension of the high-quality, immersive experience of LifeSize room-based and telepresence systems. LG's Executive Video Conferencing system boasts a sleek form factor that is powered by LifeSize HD video communications technology, which has been seamlessly integrated into the 24-inch HD display to deliver:
1. HD Video Communications: Point-to-point HD video calls at 720p30 HD resolution with integrated 720p camera, microphone array and premium speakers.
2. HD Display: Fully integrated HD video and wideband audio system in a premium 24-inch display with 1920 x 1080 HD resolution.
3. Interoperability with Unified Communication providers: Broad interoperability with video communications systems and IP/PBX installations allow this video conferencing system to be connected to mainstream Unified Communications technologies from vendors such as Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert), Asterisk, Avaya, Broadsoft, Cisco, Microsoft and Shoretel - helping customers maximize the full potential of HD video communications.
The new system is based on the LifeSize Passport. It is a recently introduced smallscale system which also offers Skype (News - Alert) functionality. The LG Executive will be available in Europe in September for a recommended price of just under EUR 3,000, excluding VAT.
