Orange Delivers Virtual Meeting Environment

By Bob Emmerson, TMC European Editor

Orange Business Systems has supplied a high-definition, videoconferencing solution to DSM (News - Alert), a vendor of products and services in Life and Materials Sciences.

Taking place in five locations spread throughout the world, the first conference involved the 400-member management team. The system, created by Orange Business Services (News - Alert), was supported by Tandberg, VisionsConnected and Dutchview.

According to Orange officials, this is the first conferencing event to be realized at this scale, with high-definition quality and at a global level.

The conference was transmitted via digital videoconferencing network in combination with a many-to-many interconnection structure. Managers based in Delft and Heerlen, Netherlands; Kaiseraugst, Switzerland; Shanghai, China; and Parsippany, New Jersey, were interconnected during the five-hour conference and could experience two-way communication in high definition quality via more than 30 IP-based videoconferencing terminals.

Aloys Kregting, DSM chief information officer said that, although many said it would be impossible to realize, the event turned out to be a great success.

“The interaction between the different locations felt like face-to-face contact, which was incredibly impressive to experience,” Kregting said. “Apart from being very innovative, it is not hard to imagine the cost and time savings we realized.”

In addition, DSM has signed a five-year, multimillion Euro contract with Orange Business Services for a fully managed global videoconferencing service. The agreement initially covers 80 video end points in 20 countries on five continents. The intention is to cover all DSM locations all over the world in the next two years.
