Avistar Achieves Improvements in Financial Results for 2008

By Vivek Naik, TMCnet Contributor

Avistar Communications recently announced that its financial results for all the twelve months of 2008, and also the fourth quarter of 2008 (Q408), clearly indicate improvements and possibly give pointers to a more sustained growth in 2009 and beyond. Avistar (News - Alert) feels that it is confident and ready to achieve a 75 percent growth in 2009.

Avistar’s core strength and business is desktop video communications. Its products are installed in more than a hundred thousand desktops across the globe. Significant businesses such as IBM (News - Alert) Corp., Sony Corp., LifeSize Communications, Inc. and Polycom Inc., are understood to be using its solution for their cross continental video communications.
The financial results were declared in accordance Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), which are cast in stone for regularity, sincerity, consistency, method permanence, non-compensation, prudence, periodicity, Full Disclosure and continuity. The most significant figure is that Avistar’s cumulative cash inflow in Q408 was a positive US $456,000, achieved for the first time without a significant IP settlement.
Total income it earned from its normal business practices, or revenue, up by 62 percent from 2007, that is US $ 3.1 mil up from 1.9 mil; second and third quarterly improvements in revenue averaged a plus fifty percent improvement; research, development, sales, marketing, general and administrative operating expenses in Q408 were down to US $ 3.1 mil from 5.6 mil in Q407; net loss in Q4 was down to US$ 231,000 from 3.7 mil, or, in terms of share values, down to US $ 0.01 from 0.11;
Avistar works with technology partners and resellers, in more than 40 countries, such as IBM to provide bandwidth management for Unified Communications (News - Alert), ClearOne for speaker cum phone integration, City Information Services (CityIS) for distribution and reselling of its C3 (News - Alert) product in Singapore and parts of Asia, NetServices and Touchline Video and Beyondis for the same function in the UK, and Fontel for marketing and distributorship in the US.
In a separate interview with TMC, Stephen Epstein (News - Alert), its chief marketing officer said, “Desktop video conferencing, or “Personal Video Conferencing,” as some call it, is predicted to grow from 8 percent of a global $1.5 billion marketing in 2008, to 23 percent of a global $1.7 billion market in 2012. The Avistar business growth is surely aligning to the industry growth suggested in recent analyst reports.”
The adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), a non-GAAP means of assessing the health and profitability of the company from the management’s perspective, for the Q4’s was a profit of US $591,000 as compare with a loss of US $2.9 mil.
