Report: Avaya Leads the Worldwide Unified Communications Market

A Dell’Oro Group Enterprise Telephony Report recently placed Avaya, a global provider of business communications applications, systems and services, as the leader in the worldwide unified communications (UC) market in revenues.


Enterprises of all sizes depend on Avaya’s (News - Alert) state-of-the-art communications that improve efficiency, collaboration, customer service and competitiveness.

The Dell’ (News - Alert)Oro Group, a research firm that provides market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, included unified communications research for the first time in its quarterly report. Avaya reportedly leads the market in the third quarter of 2008 with 22 percent of the global share, more than three points ahead of its nearest competitor. The total market for the U.S. is quoted to be around $3.1 billion.
Unified communications will be the next disruptive technology according to Alan Weckel, director, Dell'Oro Group.

"UC is bringing functions that have historically been confined to core PBX (News - Alert) hardware into software applications. The companies that can lead in this transition -- and deliver the responsive, real-time communications features that companies want -- are best positioned to compete in the new era of business communications," he said.

The Dell'Oro Group defines unified communication as the integration of voice with other modes of real-time communications, including instant messaging, video and multi-party collaboration, as well as e-mail and messaging. Cisco, Nortel, Alcatel-Lucent, Siemens and Microsoft (News - Alert) were the others tracked in this research report.

This feature talks about UC including any number of communications media available today — IM, voice, video, e-mail, voicemail, SMS, document sharing, conferencing, and more. It also includes availability, or presence, information, which enables users to identify preferred modes of communication based on caller, time of day, day of the week, location, meeting times, and so on.

Avaya's enterprise telephony and unified communications solutions are powered by Avaya Communication Manager, a business communications software platform that aids organizations improve on their business user productivity and customer service experiences.
