Unified communications (UC) is gaining plenty of ground as businesses discover the value of time savings, cost savings, and improved collaboration that this powerful new communications style can bring to normal operations. With all this value afoot, that means plenty of businesses are looking to get in on the action, and with new products and services comes plenty of news. Plenty of news means plenty of opportunities, and with a weekend here, it's a great time to step back and take it all in, which we'll do just now with our Week in Review coverage.

First we had word from Ricoh (News - Alert) Americas Corp, who brought out a new group videoconferencing system. Said system is comprised of not only Vidyo (News - Alert)'s Unified Communications System P3000, but also the PJ WX4141N Ultra Short Throw Business Projection System. This combination of tools was shown off at the InfoComm 2014 event, and allows for both a hardware and software-based solution all at once. The projector is capable of use in rooms of nearly any size, as it need only be inches from the surface on which it projects.

Next came new word on a partnership between KBZ and MNS, a partnership that brings a wide array of new options to Cisco (News - Alert) TelePresence customers. The combination brings together KBZ's Zcloud service with MNS' VideoRoaming Cloud system, which acting in concert allows for off-net telepresence calls to virtually any supplier, partner, or even customer, provided the user has sufficient infrastructure on-premise. KBZ (News - Alert) has been rapidly expanding its overall capability in this field, previously partnering with TeleSpace.

A surprising development then arrived for consideration next, as the discovery was made that headsets can actually generate return on investment (ROI). Higher quality headsets allow for a better use of the various points of UC, offering better sound quality, as well as improved comfort and reduced background noise. That improves the chances of first-call resolution among other points, and in turn, can mean sales where there weren't sales previously, or retained customers who may have left.

Then we had a look at a new concept within unified communications known as unified interactions. With unified communications' popularity within enterprise steadily growing, refinements to the processes are likely to take place. While unified communications run through one platform, unified interactions instead draw on multiple platforms to allow for rapid switching as may be required, like going from a voice chat system to a text-based messaging system. Today it requires a mutual change in the platform used, but with unified interactions, it all takes place in essentially the same field.

Finally, we had a look at a new concept that was giving rise to the concept of “hired hacking”. Specifically, the idea of “work-life balance” was being rapidly supplanted by something known as “work-life blending,” particularly in European offices including the U.K. In work-life blending, users are performing work tasks on personal time, and personal tasks on work time, and this often calls for “hired hackers,” or those who can put personal devices to work on work-related projects regardless of what issues this may raise.

This was the week that was in UC, and clearly, there was plenty going on in the field. Our global online community was right in the thick of it all, bringing back the latest news as it took place. So be sure to join us back here next week for all the latest in the field, and every weekend as well for our Week in Review coverage.
