RGB Networks Nominated by MegaFon to Launch New OTT Video Service

January 29, 2013

MegaFon (News - Alert), one of Russia’s largest mobile operators, has assigned RGB Networks to provide a complete transcoding and packaging solution for its new over-the-top (OTT) video service, according to Yahoo.

After launching its OTT service at the end of 2012, MegaFon increased the population of mobile Internet users nationwide, and retained its 61.6 million subscribers, representing over a quarter of the mobile users in the country.

"With our rapidly expanding subscriber base we needed the most flexible and reliable IP video delivery solution available to keep pace with customer demands and need for quality," Vitaly Starodubov, COO at MegaLabs, said in a company statement. "OTT services are essential to the future of video delivery in Russia, and we needed a solution that could ensure our vision comes to fruition. RGB's technology perfectly meets our needs and adds value to our long-term business strategy."

MegaFon also announced that Verimatrix (News - Alert), a company specializing in revenue enhancement for global digital TV services, was given the task of securing MegaFon’s combined IPTV and OTT video services.

“We are delighted to provide revenue security for MegaFon and look forward to supporting the company’s delivery of combined IPTV and OTT services as it continues to grow,” Steve Oetegenn (News - Alert), chief marketing and sales officer for Verimatrix, said in the source. “This is a great deployment for Verimatrix as it further strengthens our foothold in Russia.”

The duo, according to Yahoo, will help deliver OTT services to a growing market with mobile devices, without concerns for supporting growth in channels, resolutions, profiles or device types. With help from RGB Networks and Verimatrix, MegaFon looks to deliver high-quality content to iOS devices and IP set-top boxes, with hopes of growing in order to support Android (News - Alert) devices in the near future.
