Enterprise App Stores: Going Beyond Mobile

When people hear the term Enterprise App Store (EAS), they usually think of mobile apps and devices, and how to control the distribution and management to employees in a company or organization.

While the app store paradigm is an optimal way to deliver mobile apps in a self-service manner like in the consumer world, the right way to approach “Enterprise” App Stores is to look beyond mobile.

In a typical enterprise, there will be multiple types of devices and applications, and documents. As such, the end points to consider need to go beyond tablets and phones. Laptops and desktops will still remain very relevant in the enterprise as alternative access points.

If you look at the way app stores work in terms of design and ease of use on the mobile device, there is no reason why that same model can’t be extended to desktops and laptops as a much easier way for end users to find what they need.

Think of an EAS as corporate intranet 2.0.

Corporate intranets have run their course. Most are full of content, but many are still not very usable. When it comes to mobile devices, it’s simply prohibitive. Using an app store model on enterprise endpoints is a way to not only extend the content on the intranet to mobile devices, but also a better and easier way for employees to find information.

One of the business challenges that companies face is their mobile workforce needs anywhere, anytime access to corporate content. However, current intranets are not feasible as it’s not reachable out in the field or prohibitive on mobile device form factors.

For example, the idea that a salesperson can have instant access to information they need anywhere, anytime in the field is pretty powerful and ultimately what an EAS should be about.

Companies have just as much if not more information and content locked-up in traditional files and documents than they do mobile apps.

If you think about it, the average number of mobile apps a typical enterprise will have in six-12 months is probably not that many. So if you only have “two” apps, you don’t really need an app store, but, if you look at ALL the content in a company and the need for users to get to that content, using the app store paradigm is the way to go.

What is the killer app for the enterprise? There isn’t ONE. It’s simply easy access to information anywhere, anytime.
