CRIX Develops Collaborative Platform Using Red Hat, JBoss and Alfresco Solutions
The Clinical Research Information Exchange (CRIX) has launched a standards-based electronic information exchange for clinical research information that is based on a combination of Red Hat (News - Alert), JBoss and Alfresco solutions.
CRIX is a non-profit collaborative consortium that includes Eli Lilly, AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Novartis and focuses on the development of new drug therapies.
CRIX officials said that the organization embarked on the CRIX collaborative platform with Rivet Logic, an open source systems integrator and made the decision to utilize open source solutions to ensure that the platform would be based upon established standards.
“It was quickly clear that we wanted Red Hat Enterprise Linux and JBoss Enterprise Middleware to support our efforts,” said Mark Vermette, product manager for CRIX International.
The key reasons for choosing Red Hat were the “technical excellence” of its products and its “legendary support,” said Vermette.
Launched in June 2008, the CRIX collaboration platform was developed using Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Alfresco enterprise content management (ECM), JBoss enterprise portal platform and JBoss enterprise application platform, including JBoss hibernate.
Vermette said that Alfresco provided his organization with an enterprise-scale content management solution based entirely on open standards and said it enables consortium members to accelerate collaboration and information flows for clinical research.
“What we absolutely needed was a platform that could be used across the broad arena of clinical research that was independent of business processes, legal documentations, intellectual property protections and marketing strategies,” said Vermette.
The platform delivers a shared knowledgebase that is designed to enable collaboration and facilitate economies of scale in the pharmaceuticals industry. CRIX hopes that this platform will lower transaction fees, reduce manual data entry errors, shorten processing time for new therapies, and more.
