Bezeq to Use Alcatel-Lucent for Metro Ethernet in Israel

By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Alcatel-Lucent, a provider of communications solutions, says that it’s been selected by Bezeq (News - Alert), Israel’s largest telecommunications provider, for a new metro Ethernet network.

Alcatel-Lucent (News - Alert) is providing Ethernet and IP routing solution to Bezeq, including Virtual Private LAN Service and Ethernet-lines. Alcatel-Lucent is set to provide IP-VPN functionality and other functionalities to Bezeq, enhancing its Ethernet L2 services. The solution is expected to help Bezeq tailor business VPN service offerings.

Bezeq and its subsidiaries offer domestic, international and cellular phone services, broadband Internet and other data communications services. Its base line falls in providing communication services for multi-channel television, leased lines, and corporate networks.

With the solution provided by Alcatel-Lucent, Bezeq can update operators’ needs to evolve to packet-based network architectures as part of its ongoing MPLS network transformation process. This approach helps Bezeq support the convergence of IP voice, data and video over Layer 2 and/or Layer 3 business VPN services and other rich functionalities.

Alcatel-Lucent says its Ethernet & IP routing solution will ensure reliable service delivery.

The company says it provides solutions that enable service providers, enterprises and governments worldwide, to deliver voice, data and video communication services to end-users.

Formed from the merger of Alcatel and Lucent Technologies, Alcatel-Lucent combines two entities that share a common lineage that can be traced back to 1986, when Alcatel’s parent company, CGE acquired ITT’s European telecom business. Nearly 60 years earlier, ITT had purchased most of AT&T’s (News - Alert) manufacturing operations outside the United States. AT&T was Lucent’s former parent company.
