Procera DPI Technology to Aid Indonesian Internet Provider

By Michael Dinan, TMCnet Editor

A Los Gatos, California-based company is saying today that it’s working with Indonesia’s largest Internet provider to provide control, protection and “traffic awareness” for complex networks using a widely discussed technology that’s created divisions among Web users and overseers in the United States.

Officials from Procera Networks (News - Alert) Inc. say their deep packet inspection solution, “PacketLogic PL 7620” will aid Cyberindo Aditama boost performance in the 182 Indonesian cities it serves.

According to the service provider’s chief technical officer, Tony Hariman, the company is now using Procera’s product to receive real-time reporting and to ensure that it’s distributing its bandwidth equally among cable subscribers.

“We find it very useful for troubleshooting and capacity planning and are currently extending PacketLogic to our other access networks – DSL, 3G, MDU WiFi (News - Alert) – for the same purpose,” Hariman said. “Our goal is to leverage PacketLogic technology across all of the networks serving our residential subscriber base.”

Generally speaking, DPI is a form of computer network filtering that examines data as it passes an inspection point, and can search for things such as spam, viruses or some type of pre-defined criteria. DPI is at the forefront of advanced network security functions – a hot topic – as well as Internet “eavesdropping,” censorship and data mining.

Earlier this year, a group of IT professionals this week launched a nonprofit organization dedicated to deep packet inspection.

The organization, an Internet-based group known as dPacket.org with a Web site at that address, is designed to foster discussion and collaboration on the sweeping topic of DPI, its founders said.

Kyle Rosenthal, the new organization’s executive director, said the technologies are being used for a multitude of reasons.

“The top two are network visibility and control,” Rosenthal told TMCnet in an interview. “And for those purposes, for network security and traffic optimization, technologies already are being widely deployed in environments that include government and educational networks.”

“The question is: what does this mean as technologies start to look past the packet header?” Rosenthal said.

For Rosenthal and other dPacket.org founders, DPI technology, in the traditional of many Internet phenomena, often outpaces government regulators and others, and there’s a dire need to create a place where people can collaborate, get “good” information and start working together toward a common framework.

According to Hariman, Cyberindo Aditama switched from Cisco (News - Alert) technology to Procera due to performance, open API and reporting tools. He said that many cable subscribers hack their modems to obtain unauthorized bandwidth, but with PacketLogic, CBN can prevent that.

Jon Lindén, Procera’s vice president of global marketing, said that in today’s highly competitive market, the quality of the customer’s experience must be maintained in order to retain subscribers.

“PacketLogic allows ISPs to not only address bandwidth pressures for an ideal experience, but to identify and add new revenue-generating services without impacting network latency,” Lindén said.

Company officials say that PacketLogic is now used by more than 400 customers, including of ILECs, CLECs, PTTs and other broadband service providers.
