By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Nortel (News - Alert) announced today that it was recently chosen by the Bahamas Telecommunications Company, the primary telecom operator in the Bahamas,to expand its wireless network services throughout the nation.

The network expansion will not only allow BTC to serve more customers in more areas but also offer advanced wireless services such as Web browsing, streaming video and multimedia messaging, according to the company.

Ray Bulengo, a vice president at Nortel, said that this network expansion will keep BTC at the leading edge of telecommunications in Bahamas with a fast and reliable nationwide wireless network.

According to Bulengo, Nortel has a longstanding relationship with BTC which is based on their ability to deliver customer satisfaction again and again through the quality, reliability and scalability of their wireless services and solutions.

The network expansion is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2008, according to the company. By upgrading BTC’s existing TDMA network to GSM, Nortel will expand coverage, improve reliability, provide better in-building reception and increase speed by up to three times over its current network. As per the agreement, the new network will also include the Nortel’s Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution technology, company officials say. By leveraging this technology BTC will be able to offer its customers high-bandwidth services and accommodate additional voice traffic.

Kirk Griffin, senior executive vice president at Bahamas Telecommunications Company, said that at BTC they strive to offer extensive choice of services to their subscribers in the Bahamas. BTC wanted the enhanced voice and data capabilities and Nortel was the vendor with the proven wireless solution that best met their requirements for faster speed, more reliability and greater capacity, Griffin said.

BTC expects the implementation of Nortel’s EDGE technology to allow them to expand their customer base and offer new services, company officials say.
