Say you’ve got a pretty great business going for you. Your products and services are at the top of everyone’s list, except your computing and communications solutions could use a bit of tweaking. You’ve considered cloud computing to streamline processes, but have heard too much about why it’s not a good idea to look towards the cloud.

Believe it or not, you may actually be doing more harm than good by avoiding the cloud. Here are some common misconceptions about the cloud, and the truth behind this pretty powerful technology.

1. “It’s Not Secure”

This just simply isn’t true. A variety of defenses can be used against the most common attacks, ranging from basic firewalls, vulnerability scanning and encryption to network intrusion detection and network intrusion prevention, multifactor access control and monitoring. Implementing a series of concentric defenses can provide a stronger security posture.

2. “There’s No Control”

By selecting a cloud provider that has a global footprint and offers data accountability, it’s simple to address data governance.

3. “It’s Cheap/Expensive”

It’s both, actually. The up-front costs of a cloud migration are often sizable, but the savings over time typically offset the initial expenditure.

4. “The Cloud is One, Massive Ethereal Thing”

Smart Data Collective reports that there are “hundreds if not thousands” of clouds in the United States alone run by everything from big tech players to startups.

5. “It’s Not Reliable”

Amazon actually debunked this one. The origin of the reliability claims come from an illusion of control, he said. "People think if they can control it they have more say in how things go. It's like being in a car versus an airplane, but you're much safer in a plane,” said Adam Selipsky, vice president of Amazon Web Services (News - Alert).

Cloud migration and its associated benefits and challenges continue to inspire a great deal of debate in IT circles. There are many arguments for and against cloud adoption as a viable alternative to on-premise solutions.
