Clinch Valley Medical Center Annual Community Benefit Report Details Significant Contributions to the Richlands Community
RICHLANDS, Va. --(Business Wire)--
Valley Medical Center (CVMC) recently released its annual Community
Benefit Report to Richlands and surrounding areas. Highlights of the
report include key quality and safety initiatives, as well as new
physicians and specialty service lines added to better serve the

Center. "Our hospital leadership, employees, volunteers and physicians
are active and engaged in the community, and, as local residents, they
have a vested interest in providing high quality care to the people who
live and work here. We are focused on continually improving the hospital
by investing in new technology and equipment, adding new services and
specialties, enhancing quality and safety measures, and recruiting the
best medical talent. We are excited to release our Community Benefit
Report and share some of the good work taking place at our hospital."
The hospital's accomplishments in 2013 include:
Development of a new interventional cardiology lab, which opened in
2013, and more than $2 million in new equipment investments, including
a linear accelerator, treatment planning system, and upgraded surgical
suites for the Cancer Treatment Center.
Recruitment of three new physicians, including specialists in
pulmonology, vascular surgery and family medicine, and the acquisition
of Clinch alley Physician Associates, a multi-disciplinary physician
group with 15 physicians and five nurse practitioners.
An affiliation with the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute that provides
community members the opportunity to see heart institute physicians
for cardiac care at CVMC. This affiliation provides a referral source
for CVMC patients into the Wellmont Health System for cardiology care
that cannot be provided at CVMC, such as open heart surgery.
Participation in LifePoint Hospitals' Hospital Engagement Network
(HEN), a national quality effort of the Department of Health and Human
Services' (HHS) Partnership for Patients initiative. The goal set by
the Partnership for Patients initiative for every HEN is to achieve a
40 percent decrease in hospital-acquired conditions by December 2014.
Performance data for LifePoint hospitals, including CVMC, show that
the company is well on the way to reaching this goal, having already
achieved a 38 percent reduction by the end of the first quarter of
2014, a performance measure significantly better than national

With an annual payroll of $37 million and more than 600 employees, CVMC
is one of the largest employers in the southwestern Virginia region. In
addition, CVMC paid more than $512,000 in state sales taxes as well as
property taxes in 2013. The hospital also provided more than $3.4
million in charity care to uninsured, low-income patients.
