Internet as quick as you think? We're close [Bath Chronicle (England)]
(Bath Chronicle (England) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Broadband at the speed of thought has taken another step closer to being reality in the north east Somerset area. A people-powered company behind plans for ultrafast broadband now has two properties connected to a fibre optic network it is creating. The properties in Newton St Loe are now enjoying speeds in excess of 700 megabits per second.
And directors of Wansdyke Telecom, a community interest company, are hoping that rural businesses and residents will take the opportunity to see what the speed could mean for them.
The company intends building out from its village base to most of the rural areas within north east Somerset.
Director Matt McCabe said: "It's about the ability to do whatever you want to do on the internet without waiting.
"It's doing things at the speed of thought."
The company says when people no longer notice their broadband connection, it will know it has succeeded.
The company has been staging demonstrations of what can be achieved with a high quality and high-speed broadband and will be holding more in the weeks to come at Newton Farm Shop.
Director Evan Weinberg said it was important the rural community did not drop the wrong side of the digital divide, and pledged the network would trigger the fastest speeds in the country.
The company has the support of North East Somerset MP Jacob Rees Mogg who said the demonstration was real progress.
He said: "The lifeblood for rural communities over the next 100 years is how we communicate with the outside world. "The demonstration is real progress. It is going to preserve the welfare of rural communities and allow us to lead the lives we want to lead."
